Top club lifesavers from across the UK set to complete at world championships – Rescue 2014
More than 200 athletes head to compete against the best in the world in Montpellier.
Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) clubs are sending athletes to compete against the best in the world in lifesaving sport at the Rescue 2014 lifesaving championships.
More than 200 members from RLSS UK lifesaving clubs have qualified to complete at the world championships in Montpellier, France, September 13 to 29.
The event is the largest and most prestigious of its kind in the world and members will battle it out against the best in lifesaving sport.
RLSS UK’s head of Lifesaving Sport, Elouise Greenwood, said: “We are thrilled that the top athletes in lifesaving sport UK are heading to France. They have all trained and fundraised so hard to secure their places and qualify for the events, which are both mentally and physically challenging.
“All at RLSS UK wish them the best of luck in all of their events.”
Rescue 2014 will include five separate competitions – World National Team Championships, World Interclub Championships, World Masters Championships, World Surf Boat Championships, and World Inflatable Rescue Boat Championships. Around 6,000 athletes are expected to compete across the competitions.
Club athletes will be taking part in the World Interclub Championships competition made up of several disciplines around pool and beach lifesaving, simulated emergency rescue and Ironman/Ironwoman.
Elouise added: “This event is an incredible opportunity to compete at the highest level and continuing to establish the UK on world lifesaving sport stage.
“It also helps to develop lasting international relationships which not only beneficial to our clubs and athletes, but is extremely important in the global fight against drowning.”
In addition to club athletes, RLSS UK and Surf Life Saving GB (SLSGB) are sending two national teams to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the event’s World National Team Championships competition. The 24 sports men and women that make up the teams are the elite in lifesaving sport.
